Prions / Edge of Tomorrow
Thursday Jun 10, 2021
Thursday Jun 10, 2021
Some things are great when folded. Origami, T-shirts, even dough to make some sweet sweet sourdough bread. One thing you shouldn't fold: proteins. Josh is tackling another cheerful, lighthearted and fun little topic... the little misfiled proteins called Prions. ...yeah... Then Brett gets into a movie that takes the genius of Groundhog Day and the fun of Starship Troopers and puts it together with two of the greatest actors of all time (Cruise and Blunt): Edge of Tomorrow.

Ejection Seats / OK Go

Ejection seats. Imaging being in a fighter jet, something goes wrong and your best option is to launch your rocket seat up and out and hope the parachute works. Well today we discuss an incredible video showing the slow motion testing of such a seat and Brett brings some surprising ejection seat facts to the show. Then Josh brings a new type of content to the clearinghouse. If you're not familiar with the viral music videos from this group of entertainment geniuses, well it's time you were. This show is all about the epic band: OK Go.

Knots (and Boy Scouts) / UFOs
Thursday May 27, 2021
Thursday May 27, 2021
For this episode, you should take a page out of the Boy Scout's manual and 'be prepared.' Not for knot-tying talk like Josh intended but for the dark reminder that the Boy Scouts of America are known for being involved with some pretty seriously bad sex abuse scandals. And for some reason, Brett can't stop bringing it up! Speaking of Brett, do you love it when he rants about UFOs? Well, too bad. You should take a page out of his wife's book and suck it up because Brett is talking about the Leslie Kean novel UFOs that's all about... you guessed it: UFOs.

Heists IRL / Kilo Two Bravo
Thursday May 20, 2021
Thursday May 20, 2021
Brett discusses the foreign Netflix sensation "Money Heist" (thanks for the content recommendation DV!) and looks into a few real life heists that seem to crazy to be true. Then Josh lightens the mood with a war movie about shrapnel, mines and presumably limbs getting blown off. I hate to say it... but I'm going to have to watch this movie. It's the one constant in the Universe: Josh's content recommendations are always spot on, even if they are a little disturbing, violent and difficult to watch. (Don't even come in here with your speed of light talk.)

Vladimir Komarov's Fate / Threes!
Thursday May 13, 2021
Thursday May 13, 2021
Josh discusses the dubious Soviet Russia safety program during the space race, including the first ever space fatality of Cosmonaut Komarov. In fact, both the US and the USSR had space program fatalities in 1967: the Soyuz 1 and the Apollo 1 (the latter being during training on the ground). I just realized that even if it involved space-age technology, I might be inclined to avoid being a part of a number "1" of anything like this. Speaking of numbers, Brett gets lost in the elegantly simple but beautiful (and addictive!) number tile game that he's been playing for waaaay too long and probably way too much. Today we're talking a video game of the mobile-platform variety: Threes!

Illegal Gum / The Last of Us Part 2

Singapore is an incredible city-state but it has some... rigid laws. Like no gum allowed! But even these seemingly strict laws have a reason behind them and after discussing tight vs. loose cultures, Josh gets back into a highly recommended video game, a sequel nonetheless. The Last of Us Part 2 is on today's apocalypse menu.

Thursday Apr 22, 2021
For our 50th episode, we invite friend and super fan FlipSixThreeHole onto the show to present his PhD dissertation through an experimental and accelerated graduate course. As we all know, Harvard doesn't just hand out advanced degrees in contentology. But if anyone can handle the pressure of a multi-year doctorate content course being condensed into the span of an hour-long podcast episode, it's Nick Underwood aka FlipSixThreeHole. If all goes well, Nick may be sporting the prestigious title of Contentologist. (It's a real thing.)

Wealth Inequality Visualized / Infected
Thursday Apr 15, 2021
Thursday Apr 15, 2021
Do you think it's difficult to imagine the scope of a billion dollars? You'd be right. If you think the wealth gap is getting wider and a large amount of wealth is being hoarded by a small group of people, you'd also be right. You should definitely check out the link in the show notes to see this visually represented in a truly astonishing way. Then Josh talks scary triangles, scary infections and a generous and aggressive content strategy that's so good, it's scary. It's time for the Scott Sigler book (and free podcast version!): Infected.

Thursday Apr 08, 2021
Thursday Apr 08, 2021
Yikes. Wow. Nature is metal. Josh continues with his Mother Nature off-top Trent kick by discussing a bird of prey that has some, um, unique murdering methods. The shrike is a brutal badass birdie. Then Brett tries to get all science-y when discussing an episode of his favorite podcast, Making Sense. Sam Harris has a conversation with prominent thinker Iain McGilchrist, a man who has thought about the division in our brains (and all brains!) for over three decades. Philosophy, psychiatry, literature... this fellow does it all. Including blowing my mind(s) with facts about our divided brain! It's right hemisphere vs. left hemisphere while we explore this dense topics: The Divided Mind.
